The Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center, in partnership with the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council, is spearheading an ambitious initiative to increase awareness and understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) across the state of Louisiana. This groundbreaking series of trainings will equip social workers, foster parents, and community members with essential knowledge and skills to address the complexities of FASD.
About the Training Program
Starting in November 2024 and running through June 2025, these monthly, in-person sessions are designed to provide comprehensive education about FASD, its impacts, and effective strategies for support. The statewide initiative aims to:
- Educate and Empower: Deliver up-to-date, evidence-based information on FASD to individuals directly involved in caregiving and community support.
- Build Awareness: Enhance understanding of FASD’s prevalence and its effects on children, families, and communities.
- Encourage Collaboration: Foster partnerships between social workers, foster parents, and other community stakeholders to better address the needs of individuals impacted by FASD.
Why This Matters
FASD is a pressing public health issue that often goes underdiagnosed or misunderstood. Increasing awareness and equipping caregivers and professionals with the right tools can significantly improve outcomes for individuals living with FASD. By addressing knowledge gaps and fostering a supportive community, LSU Health Sciences Center and the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council are making a lasting impact.
